There is something special about watching a child discover they can do something they never thought possible.
Maybe it is the first time they climb higher than they expected. Maybe it is learning a new skill they have been practicing for weeks. Or maybe it is simply the excitement of saying, “Look what I can do!”
Aerial arts gives kids the opportunity to move, create, problem-solve, and build confidence — all while having a lot of fun. At Cloud 9 Aerial Dance, we see students of all ages light up when they step onto the fabric for the first time.
Here are five reasons kids love aerial arts.
For many kids, aerial feels like stepping into a circus.
They get to climb, spin, hang upside down, and learn skills that look amazing. Something is exciting about leaving the ground and discovering a new way to move.
But behind every “magical” moment is practice, patience, and learning new skills one step at a time.
One of the biggest rewards of aerial is seeing progress happen.
A student may start their first class unsure if they can even hold themselves on the fabric. A few weeks later, they are climbing, creating poses, or mastering a skill they once thought was impossible.
Those small wins matter. They add up, they compound.
Aerial teaches kids that challenges become achievable when they keep trying, ask questions, and celebrate their progress along the way.
Kids are naturally drawn to movement, and aerial arts is a fun way to build strength, coordination, balance, and body awareness.
Instead of doing traditional exercises, students are focused on learning a new skill or creating a sequence. They are building full-body muscles while having fun and staying engaged.
Many students are surprised by just how strong they become!
Aerial is not just about tricks.
Students learn how to move with the fabric, connect skills together, and express themselves through movement. For kids who love dance, performing, storytelling, or creating something new, aerial offers a unique way to express their creativity.
There is no single “right” way to move. Each student gets to bring their own personality into what they do.
One of the things families often mention is how encouraging the aerial community is.
Students cheer each other on, celebrate each other's accomplishments, and learn that everyone has their own journey. A beginner student and an experienced student may be working on different skills, but they can both be proud of their progress.
For many kids, aerial becomes a place where they feel comfortable being themselves and trying something new.
(... and by the way, adults love aerial for all the same reasons too!!)
